Become a Muʿtamad Certified Teacher
A Professional Credential That Proves What You Can Do
This is not a participation certificate. Muʿtamad Certification means you have been independently evaluated on your lesson planning, classroom delivery, parent communication, ethics, and the real-world implementation of professional teaching frameworks. It is the credential that tells parents: this teacher has been observed, reviewed, and verified.
It is not a course completion certificate. It is not a replacement for an ijāzah (which certifies Qur’ānic recitation and transmission — a separate and deeply respected credential). It is not a guarantee of students or income. And it is not available to everyone who applies — only to those who meet the standard.
What This Certification Is Not
A professional evaluation of your teaching practice, based on portfolio evidence, live lesson observation, and demonstrated implementation of evidence-based frameworks. It results in a credential and a public directory listing that parents can trust.
What This Certification Is
Your Certification Pathway-
Finish three mandatory courses and one elective at Tier 1 or Tier 2. Qur’ān teachers complete a fourth mandatory course. All courses must be completed within 24 months of your application date.
-
Assemble evidence of your real teaching practice: lesson plans, parent communication samples, intake documentation, framework implementation, and a professional reflection. This is not a test — it is documentation of what you already do.
-
I observe one of your regular lessons (30–60 minutes) via Zoom. Real students, real class, your normal teaching. My camera is off. I am evaluating your planning, delivery, engagement, differentiation, and professionalism — not performing a gotcha.
-
Within 5 business days of your observation, you receive a written evaluation with your certification decision. If certified, you receive your credential, your directory listing, and your trust badge..

One Elective Course (Choose Your Designation)
In addition to the mandatory courses, you must complete at least one elective. The elective you choose determines the professional designation displayed on your credential and directory listing.
You can earn multiple designations over time by completing additional electives. Each new designation is added to your profile and credential. There is no limit.

***Understanding the Tier Requirement
Every Ms. Lamia Learns course is offered in three tiers:
Tier 1: Full engagement — complete portfolio, private review, reviewed certification
Tier 2: Active participation — interactive assignments, focused engagement
Tier 3: Listen-in — access to content, participation certificate only
For Muʿtamad Certification, your mandatory courses must be completed at Tier 1 or Tier 2.
Tier 3 completion alone does not demonstrate the active engagement required for professional certification. If you have completed a course at Tier 3, you may upgrade to Tier 1 or Tier 2 by completing the additional requirements for that tier.
STEP 2: Build your portfolio
Your portfolio is the centerpiece of the evaluation. It demonstrates that you have internalized and applied course frameworks in your real teaching practice — not just attended training.
If you are already teaching professionally, you likely have most of this material. The portfolio asks you to organize and present it — not to create something artificial.
-
1. Teaching Philosophy Statement (500–800 words) — Referencing specific frameworks from your courses and how they shape your current teaching practice.
2. Lesson Plans (minimum 3) — Showing evidence of UDL principles, cognitive load management, and learner-differentiated instruction. At least one must address a diverse learner scenario.
3. Pre-Trial / Intake Documentation — A sample of the structured intake process you use with new students. Not a generic welcome message — a real assessment of learner needs.
4. Parent Communication Samples (minimum 2, redacted) — Showing professionalism, clarity, and appropriate boundaries.
5. Framework Implementation Evidence — Documentation showing active use of at least two Ms. Lamia Learns frameworks in your regular teaching.
6. Professional Reflection (300–500 words) — Using a reflective model (Gibbs, ICE, or What/So What/Now What) to discuss a teaching challenge and how you applied course strategies.
Step 3: The Lesson Observation
After your portfolio has been reviewed and approved, the next step is a live lesson observation through Zoom. One of your regular lessons will be observed as part of the certification review process.
Duration: One full lesson, usually 30–60 minutes. (Your real students, regular class, and normal teaching schedule)
Observer conduct: The observer’s camera will remain off, and there will be no interaction with your students. This is an observation only, not an intervention.
Consent: You must confirm that any required student or parent consent has been obtained for an observer to be present.
-
Lesson structure and pacing. Learner engagement. Differentiation. Cognitive load management. Online teaching competence. Assessment and feedback. Warmth and professionalism. Lesson closure.
-
Teach your normal lesson. Do not prepare a special demonstration. The observation is designed to confirm what your portfolio already shows — that your everyday teaching reflects professional standards. The best preparation is to teach the way you always teach.

An ijāzah is a sacred credential certifying Qur’ānic recitation and chain of transmission. The Muʿtamad Standard evaluates something different: your teaching — your lesson planning, communication with parents, ability to differentiate for diverse learners, and your online classroom management. Many exceptional qāri’s are not trained educators. Many trained educators do not hold ijāzah. These credentials serve different purposes and strengthen each other. Holding both is powerful.
-
Experience is valuable, and years of teaching develop instincts that newer teachers do not have. But experience alone does not tell a parent what kind of teacher you are today. Certification gives your experience a public, verifiable form — so parents can see, not just hear, that your years of teaching have produced genuine professional expertise.
-
No. You can complete the required courses over time, at your own pace. The only constraint is that all qualifying courses must have been completed within the 24 months preceding your application date. Courses completed more than 24 months ago do not count toward eligibility unless you have completed a refresher module.
-
Your mandatory courses must be completed at Tier 1 or Tier 2. Tier 3 (listen-in) completion does not satisfy the requirements for certification because it does not involve the active engagement needed to demonstrate professional competence. If you completed a course at Tier 3, you can upgrade by completing the Tier 1 or Tier 2 requirements for that course.
-
] From application submission to certification decision, the process takes approximately 6–8 weeks: eligibility verification (3–5 business days), portfolio review (15 business days), observation scheduling (within 4 weeks), and final decision (5 business days after observation). If a Revise & Resubmit decision is issued on your portfolio, add an additional 30 days for resubmission plus 10 business days for re-review.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
You will receive one of three outcomes: Certified (you met the standard), Revise & Resubmit (your portfolio shows potential but needs specific improvements — you have 30 days to resubmit with detailed guidance), or Not Yet Ready (significant gaps were identified and you should wait 90 days before reapplying). Every applicant receives written feedback regardless of the outcome.
-
Yes. If you receive a Not Yet Ready decision, you may reapply after 90 days. Your reapplication requires a full new portfolio and observation. Many teachers who are ultimately certified were not ready on their first attempt — the feedback you receive is designed to help you develop the specific areas that need strengthening.
-
Muʿtamad Certification is valid for two years from the date of issuance. Renewal requires completing at least one additional Ms. Lamia Learns course (which may earn you an additional designation), submitting an updated professional reflection, confirming active teaching status, and re-affirming the ethics agreement.
-
Renewal is lighter than the initial application. You need to: complete at least one additional course or refresher module during your certification period, submit an updated professional reflection (300–500 words), confirm you are still actively teaching, and re-affirm the ethics agreement. A renewal observation is not required for your first renewal unless concerns have been raised.
-
Yes. Certified teachers receive a digital trust badge and may use it on their website, social media profiles, and teaching-related marketing materials. You may also use the title “Muʿtamad Certified Teacher” in professional contexts. You may not modify the badge design, claim government accreditation, or continue using the badge after your certification expires or is revoked.
